2/26 faced with mysteries dark and vast
Feb 26th is two things: the first time I saw Phish 20 years ago
But more importantly: the first real Grateful Dead tape I ever got from a thing called furthurnet is Feb 26th, 1977. They open with a slow, never before played little 11-minute tune with no chorus called "Terrapin Station", which is just so fuckin majestic and gorgeous. It just friggin glides, and I have never liked another version as much as the first one played.
Can you imagine having seen the band for a while and having them open the first show of the year with this? You'd probably just think the whole thing had hit a new level. History shows you'd be right when you look at live GD1977 as a whole.
I won't go into the whole thing but that's not all the show has going for it, it is an absolute top-to-bottom burner and still my favorite show ever. If we were friends in high school I definitely put it on CDR for your cd binder. Swing 77 can take the Pepsi challenge with your Cornell 77 any day if you ask me.
I will link the show and the annotated lyrics
