2007 Music Discovery Renaissance (viva bit torrent!)

In 2007 I got an invite to a music bit torrent client called oink. Oink had artist’s entire catalog with cover art to go nice and cleanly into iTunes, and then to ipods. This was long before we all started streaming our tunes.

I was consuming and hoarding mp3s at an incredible rate. I loaded all of my friend’s ipods, when they visited me in Dorchester.

If I had even a mild interest in an artist I would just pirate everything they ever released, and dig my way in. This is why I love: dinosaur Jr., Ben folds, nas, dj shadow and the list just goes on forever. I had to buy a 1TB hard drive that needed its own power supply, I think it was around 200$. I bet you could get a terabyte micro SD card for under 50$ today. I had at least 600GB of music before you even got into the phish and grateful dead tapes.

Oink turned me into the snobby music nerd I am today.

I was also active on the phish messageboard phantasytour, where I got exposed to DJ shadow and Cut Chemst’s Brainfreeze DJ set, which is one of my favorite DJ sets of all time. I’ll provide a link.

Thank God for the internet.

This is crazy how the whole set is spun off of 45’s
