Last summer, I wrote a post on here that apparently resonated with a lot of people from the town I grew up in. it dealt with being emotional and nervous about having a visit with one of my oldest friends, her fiance and their new baby.
since I link every post I write on Facebook, a lot of people I grew up around saw it, and they all responded very positively. there was one thing that a lot of them kept saying:
“you should write a book, i’d read it”
I like that Idea, I would like to write a book. I've written so many blog posts, so filling pages should be no problem, but I just couldn't start something I could grip onto. I knew I could start re purposing blog posts, and then alter and connect them to serve some kind of story arch. if I've already written hundreds of pages, why would I write them again?
at first I thought it had to be an autobiography, which is my whole life story from birth until now. if that’s what it had to be i’d never do it. that’s just too tall of an order. at some point I realized that it could be a memoir, which is a little slice of my life…and I learned the difference between the two things.
so, now, i’m happy to tell you that I've made it about 25 pages into a memoir about being in NYC in spring 2020, without a place to live, while the city was the worst COVID hotspot in the country. it’s a historical time, in a historical place and I think it would be interesting to a lot of different people, from places other than just NYC because the whole world had it’s eyes on new York.
it’s not just about that though, it’s about how what happened during my homeless pandemic spring led me to rediscover writing, which in turn introduced me to a whole different, and more confident side of myself.
I am still using some of the stuff from the blog, but I want to make sure it isn’t just copied and pasted, because why would you buy a book that you can read for free online?
also, this project has me looking back at my work, and helps me realize that my skill as a writer has progressed which is a great feeling. I can apply what i’ve learned about writing to the stories i’m using for the memoir and they’ll be much better.
EYYYYY, i’m gonna need coffee if I’m going to write a book, and you can help me with that by making a small donation to the evr0ck initiative : https://ko-fi.com/evr0ck17
