Life Opening Up

Gosh, life has been very eventful, lately. I have a little time before I’m going to make dinner and head off to a meeting over in woodhaven. I think I’ll forgo the bus ride and just walk, because it’s nice out and I like walking. I might see some more random manifestations of Ganesh or his elephant cousins (it’s very likely).

On Saturday, my dear friend Heady Mike (of New Jersey) paid a morning visit to me here in Queens, as he was staying in some other part of the borough for 2 nights of a band called Sound Tribe Sector 9 over at Brooklyn Steel in Bushwick. It was great to see him, as it had been over 3 years. The funny thing about knowing Mike is that I met him when I was 4 years sober back in 2018, and he had maybe 90 days or under. Well, he stayed sober since then and has become likely the best example of what is possible in AA that I can think of, and a big part of why I returned. He’s a business owner, he’s happily married, he has a good dog, and still he wakes up at 5 in the morning and meditates every day. We even lived together (in the same room) in sober living for a little while a few years ago. I love that man, he’s a brother to me who has never given up on me.

Well, maybe a half hour after leaving he called and told me that i should just come out to Bushwick that night and see the band he was there to see, He said that he and my other dear friend Ryan (also of New Jersey) would buy me a ticket. Well, I hadn’t seen live music at all since before the COVID epidemic, so of course I took the A train to the L train and found myself at the converted warehouse or factory that is Brooklyn Steel.

STS9 is a fun dance band, it’s kind of like the best music from the Konami and Capcom NES games (Contra, Strider). I got back to doing what I do at jamband shows: dancing as weirdly as I feel like. I didn’t have the endurance to go as hard all the way through that I was going at first, but that’s ok. Maybe I need to pace myself better.

It feels like life is just opening up for me. I may be somewhat low energy lately, but I can still readily see all of the blessings, even if I need a nap.

Yesterday I got up in time to make it to Hindu temple, which was fantastic as always, and spent the rest of the day watching Obi Wan Kenobi.

I got up today at 7 because I had a big court appearance as the result of the physical altercation with my last roommate (Angel). Angel may have pinned me to the kitchen floor and punched me in the face numerous times, but he was quick to tell the NYPD officers who came to the house that I had run after him with a knife, so that we were both arrested and charged.

Well, the prosecution had no evidence of my knife wielding, but unfortunately it’ll be another month and another appearance before the charges are officially dropped.

Guess what I did after court?

If you guessed heavy nap, you were right on the money. I awoke with enough willpower to do the grocery shopping that I've been putting off for days as I filled my belly with fast food garbage.

Now, I’m going to cook some of these groceries and throw on my headphones to take my little stroll. I’ll ring my new sponsor Henry from the road, and call it a successful day.
