Rachel’s got a job

Spotify (or streaming music in general) is my favorite part of the smartphone revolution. When i first started using spotify i didn’t even have a smartphone yet, i used the web based player, amazed that i could listen to any song i could come up with. This was when I made my first playlist for someone.

Rachel,

She was very dear to me, and still holds a special place in my heart and memory.

To protect the innocent I won’t get into our whole story. The point is the playlist.

She was this very beautifully free gypsy spirit who would travel around the country like Kerouac, we rarely crossed paths but one of those times was when I decided I’d have a coffee. In the fall of 2013 I was living back in my hometown of Plymouth while my mother was trying to sell my grandmother’s condo. I was sober then, and obsessed with music, often sitting next to the computer listening for hours. I’m content to do nothing but listen to music.

I was downtown, and I went to get a coffee, and there was Rachel, with a job! I was so proud, she was able to focus the free spirit into something that paid. I noticed she was listening to cool music and she mentioned it was on spotify. I went home and made my first dedicated playlist. It had to be two things: In the spirit of Rachel, and good for a small coffee house. I can tell you that every track is there for a reason, and there is a bit of a theme. “Working day and night” by the Jacksons, “found a job” by Talking Heads. I wanted a list that could help rachel through a work day and promote positive feelings

Here’s the list, i love making lists for specific people, it’s a heartfelt way to communicate:

i’d like to share the “modern mix-tapes” i’ve made for people, they all mean something:

i thought i was in love with someone, who turned out to be an incredible friend:

Whenever a friend joins spotify, I want to welcome them with a personal playlist, the next two are for some of my oldest Friends from freshman year in high school

Nate is a top shelf human i went to high school with. i have written about his excellence in an old blog post.

there was a girl in new jersey that i think is weird and cool, which i like. i had a crush on her and make her a playlist.

man, she was not having it! but its still a good mix:

I find it hard to locate my good qualites sometimes, but i can tell you that i have incredible taste in music, and i love to share it with those i care about.
