It’s pretty well documented (by me, on this blog) that in freshman year of high school i took a lot of LSD and listened to Pink Floyd on headphones in the dark of my parents basement. Because that’s what you do in freshman year of high school, it’s in the textbook.
Nowadays i don’t really listen to the Floyd albums i tripped all over (The Wall, Dark Side of The Moon) back then, but i did recently hear “comfortably numb”. There’s that line “when i was a child i caught a fleeting glimpse”, and it brought me back to this core memory. Although i was new to psychedelics at that time, there was a certain subconscious familiarity to what was going on.
I vaguely remember when i was a little boy, getting really sick with a high fever and had maybe taken Robitussin (DXM). I don’t remember any specifics, but i remember sitting up in the middle of the night in a circle with 3 other beings, having a conversation without speaking. They were some kind of ethereal formless creatures that we’rent physically there.
That place inbetween dreams and being awake… thats the same place that acid brought me to. It’s hard to make any sense with a description of the undescribable. There was some other dimension i had traveled to in a fever dream as a child, and then found my way back to at age 14. The things that I couldn’t make any sense of, did actually make a little sense in the context of the core memory of that fever dream.
I know now that song is about the main character (Pink) of the concept album getting on heroin to hide behind the wall he was building between himself and the outside world, but back when i was in high school i thought all of the Pink Floyd stuff was about acid, So i connected the childhood dream to my early trips.
I’ve had trouble writing lately, so i thought i’d share that weird connection.
“When i was a child i had a fever…”
I don’t know why i listened to such dark scary music in the dark when i was tripping as a kid, in fact David Gilmour’s tone and phrasing still scares the shit out of me sober.
